The Shepherd School has existed in name since 1950, with an $8 million endowment by Sallie Shepherd Perkins in honor of her grandfather, Houston banker Benjamin A. Shepherd. Hans Graf was the music director of the orchestra from 2001 to 2013, the longest tenure of any Houston Symphony music director.
