The rear wheel drive D platform was a body on frame chassis used only by Imperial from 1957 until 1966, (although Chrysler would not use such nomenclature until 1964). The standard chassis had a 129.0 inches (3.28 m) wheelbase and the extended wheelbase chassis had a wheelbase of 149.5 inches (3.80 m).
The B platform or B-body was the name of two of Chrysler's midsize passenger car platforms – at first rear-wheel drive, from 1962 through 1979; and the later, unrelated front-wheel drive platform, used by the Eagle Premier / Dodge Monaco, from 1988 through 1992.
Chrysler's C platform was the basis for rear wheel drive full-size cars from 1965 to 1978. Although often misclassified, 1964 and earlier full-size Chrysler products, and 1966 and earlier Imperials are not C-bodies.
Up to this point, the Chrysler M-body entry had been sold as LeBaron, but that name was moved to a new K-car based FWD line. Following the nameplate swap, the M-body line was consolidated and simplified. 360 V8 engines were gone, as were coupes and station wagons (the K-car LeBaron's coupe and wagon replaced them).
The M-body was also the successor to the short-lived R-body, as the Chrysler New Yorker and Plymouth Gran Fury moved to it following the R-body's demise in 1981. In contrast to Ford and GM, Chrysler only marketed the R-body as a four-door sedan. Produced for only three years, the production run of the R-body chassis was far shorter than its competitors (GM B-body, 19 years; Ford Panther; 32 years). For 1982, Chrysler ended sales of the R-body chassis, marketing the M-body chassis for its largest sedans.
