Adel (/ ˈ eɪ d əl / AY-dəl) is a city in and the county seat of Dallas County, Iowa. [3] It is located along the North Raccoon River . Its population was 6,153 at the time of the 2020 Census .
Adel was platted in 1847 as the county seat for Dallas County. The population of the town expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the central business district expanded because of it. It reached its largest size in 1917 with some redevelopment occurring on the east side of the square after World War II.
The Dallas County Courthouse in Adel, Iowa, United States was built in 1902. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and is a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource. [1] In 2009 it was included as a contributing property in the Adel Public Square Historic District. [2]
