On 19 July 1776, he was created Earl Ligonier, of Clonmel, in the Peerage of Ireland. The last honour conferred upon him was his investiture as a Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath on 17 December 1781. He died on 14 June 1782, before he could be installed, and left no posterity. Cobham would be sold in 1806.

Hugh Dubh O'Neill, 5th Earl of Tyrone ("Black Hugh", meaning "black-haired" or "dark tempered") (1611–1660) was an Irish soldier of the 17th century. He is best known for his participation in the Irish Confederate Wars and in particular his defence of Clonmel in 1650.
