A list of known near-Earth asteroid close approaches less than 1 lunar distance (0.0025696 AU (384,410 km; 238,860 mi)) from Earth in 2023. [1] As most asteroids passing within a lunar distance are less than 40 meters in diameter, they generally are not detected until they are within several million km of Earth.
2023 CX 1 is the seventh asteroid discovered before being successfully predicted to impact Earth, and also the third whose meteorites were collected after its predicted impact. [ 6 ] [ 17 ] It is Sárneczky's second discovery of an impacting asteroid, after 2022 EB 5 which he discovered a year prior in March 2022.
2023 DW is a near-Earth asteroid of the Aten group. It is approximately 50 meters (160 feet) in diameter, roughly the size of the asteroid that caused the Tunguska event, [a] and was discovered by Georges Attard and Alain Maury, from the MAP (Maury/Attard/Parrott) asteroid search program in San Pedro de Atacama on 26 February 2023, when it was 0.07 AU (10 million km) from Earth. [1]
This is a list of asteroids that have impacted Earth after discovery and orbit calculation that predicted the impact in advance. As of December 2024, all of the asteroids with predicted impacts were under 5 m (16 ft) in size that were discovered just hours before impact, and burned up in the atmosphere as meteors.
Vibrations caused by the impacts are giving scientists new insight into the structure of the red planet. Recent meteorite crashes on Mars ‘could reveal clues about planet’s origin’ Skip to ...
The asteroid is also on the European Space Agency's NEO impact Risk List. When could 2024 YR4 hit Earth, and should we be concerned? Based on projections, the asteroid has little more than a 1% ...
As sky surveys improve, smaller and smaller asteroids are regularly being discovered. The small near-Earth asteroids 2008 TC 3, 2014 AA, 2018 LA, 2019 MO, 2022 EB 5, 2022 WJ 1, 2023 CX 1, 2024 BX 1, 2024 RW 1, 2024 UQ, and 2024 XA 1 are the only eleven asteroids discovered before impacting into Earth (see asteroid impact prediction).
A meteor is caught as a blurred line in this eight-second exposure Aug. 12, 2023 of the Milky Way over Abilene State Park. Meteor showers tends to be most visible after midnight, which is when ...
