In April 1956, Midas, an acronym of Muffler Installation Dealers' Association, was established by Nate H. Sherman (1898 - 1980) and the first Midas Muffler opened that year in Macon, Georgia. The chain was originally known as Midas Muffler as they specialized in the replacement of mufflers .
The company was founded by Charles J. August in 1957, originally as a franchise of another company, Midas Muffler. [2] In the mid-1960s, "Chuck" August decided that his muffler shops should offer an expanded list of services. This was not in line with the other organization's wishes. In 1966, he discontinued his affiliation with Midas Muffler. [2]
The company later added brake service several years later and was renamed Monro Muffler Brake, Incorporated. [1] In 1977, Monro Muffler had twenty stores in New York. [2] By the mid-1980s, August's Monro Mufflers had expanded to 59 stores, which sales of $21 million per year. [1] Most of these stores were located in upstate New York.
The Midas is a British made kit car initially using Mini running gear. Harold Dermott and his company, D&H Fibreglass Techniques, of Greenfield , Oldham , Greater Manchester , England came to an agreement in 1975 with Marcos cars to take over production of their Mini Marcos model.
