The unsuccessful French expedition to invade Ireland in December 1796 alerted the Crown authorities to the real and present danger posed by the United Irishmen. Throughout 1797, severe measures were taken to break up and disarm the United organisation which, in the hope of French assistance, was increasingly intent on insurrection.
In December 1796, during the French Revolutionary Wars, a French expeditionary force departed from Brest on an expedition to invade Ireland. This army of 18,000 French soldiers was intended to link up with the secret organisation of Irish Republicanism known as the United Irishmen and provoke a widespread uprising throughout the island.
