In an internal combustion engine, a head gasket provides the seal between the engine block and cylinder head(s). Its purpose is to seal the combustion gases within the cylinders and to avoid coolant or engine oil leaking into the cylinders. [1] Leaks in the head gasket can cause poor engine running and/or overheating.
A vehicle fitted with a cold air intake mounted low on the vehicle will be especially vulnerable to hydrolocking when being driven through standing water or heavy precipitation. Engine coolant entering the cylinders through various means (such as a blown head gasket ) is another common cause.
This is a list of auto parts, which are manufactured components of automobiles. This list reflects both fossil-fueled cars (using internal combustion engines) and electric vehicles; the list is not exhaustive. Many of these parts are also used on other motor vehicles such as trucks and buses.
Gaskets and shaft seals were intended to limit the leakage of oil, but they were usually not expected to entirely prevent it. The blow-by gases would diffuse through the oil and then leak through the seals and gaskets into the atmosphere, causing air pollution and odors. The first refinement in crankcase ventilation was the road draught tube.
Cooling is required to remove excessive heat—high temperature can cause engine failure, usually from wear (due to high-temperature-induced failure of lubrication), cracking or warping. Two most common forms of engine cooling are air-cooled and water-cooled. Most modern automotive engines are both water and air-cooled, as the water/liquid ...
A rocker cover gasket (valve cover gasket in the US and Canada) is used to seal the joint between the cover and engine head. Failure of the gasket can cause oil to leak from the engine. A head gasket is used to seal the joint between the head and the engine block.

The Toyota TOM'S Supra GT500 race car used a version of the 3S-GTE known as the 3S-GT, another name for the 503E which was detuned to 360 kW (480 bhp), in accordance to the regulations of GT500 at the time. This was due to the Supra's conventional engine, the 2JZ, being deemed as too front-heavy for the race car. [17]
