Marcy is a great hike but I would suggest starting with something just as enjoyable but a little shorter. Do Wright and Algonquin (and Iroquois) and plan to loop through Avy pass. The open summits of these two are just as good as Marcy and a hike along Avalanche Lake and Pass is one of the best in the Adirondacks.

Mt Marcy via the Van Hoevenburg is 3,600 feet of elevation over 7.4 miles. As already mentioned, the Van Hoevenburg trail is pretty mellow, with the toughest section being the last mile or so. Marcy will be an easier climb, but it's twice the distance and almost 15 miles round trip. Keep in mind that there is no shuttle option on Mt Marcy.
