The episode flashes back to 15 years in the past when Mellie and Fitz are newlyweds staying in Fitz's father's home. Fitz's father Big Jerry introduces them to Cyrus Beene and they begin grooming Fitz for his political career. It is possible that Mellie resents Olivia's status, due to her having a career and Fitz's love. In season two, after Fitz survives an assassination attempt, they hate each other more than ever, with Fitz now insistent on getting a divorce and Mellie beginning to overstep the bounds of her position's authority.
Fitz gets on the Marine One helicopter, leaving a sad Olivia behind. Back at OPA, Olivia, Quinn, Huck and Charlie investigate on who was the high-ranking VIP who ordered Mellie's assassination. At the end of the season, Mellie gives Fitz an ultimatum, either he becomes loyal to her, or she goes on national television and reveals Fitz's affair with Olivia. Fitz chooses Olivia, which makes Mellie reveal the affair.

Olivia and Fitz celebrate his last night in the White House by having sex, despite that Fitz is not pleased that Olivia released Maya. As Mellie is being sworn in, the Gladiators find out that there is a traitor standing on the dais and Olivia realizes that it must be Luna Vargas. Fitz leaves Olivia, and D.C., to go run his foundation in Vermont.
Olivia and Fitz face some very big consequences as the interviewer, Noah, has a recording of Mellie and Fitz lying about their marriage at almost the exact same time Olivia confirms her affair. Fitz suggests telling the truth in the interview, but Mellie refuses because it makes her look bad as a senator.
