The coat of arms of the Hawaiian Kingdom was officially adopted by the Legislative Assembly in 1845, during the reign of King Kamehameha III.The arms were designed by King the "Portcullis", [clarification needed] from the College of Arms in London, commissioned by Timoteo Ha‘alilio, the King's private secretary and royal advisor, Reverend William Richards.
Kamehameha and his council of chiefs planned to unite the rest of the Hawaiian Islands. Allies came from British and American traders, who sold guns and ammunition to Kamehameha. Another major factor in Kamehameha's continued success was the support of Kauai chief Kaʻiana and Captain William Brown of the Butterworth Squadron.
Portrait of Kamehameha I based on the original life depiction by Louis Choris. The painting was done by James Gay Sawkins in 1850 and is apparently the only historical one that depicts the king in the ʻahu ʻula.
