I'm planning to build stand out of 4X 2x6" (4.5Cm x 145Cm) planks. That will be connected to bottom 1" (3Cm) thick plywood. At top it will have 2x4" (4.5Cm x 9.5Cm) frame. The frame itself will sit on top of those 4X legs and everything will be screwed together - using steel plates/steel corner " L " brackets.
I used one sheet of 8' x 4' 3/4" Red Oak plywood from HD for $49, 100 pack of kreg screws for $4 and one 24x24" scrap piece of birch ply from my wood pile for the bottom piece (since its hidden and I wasn't going to go buy another sheet of red oak) The stand is 24 x 24 x 36 for my Biocube 29... www.reef2reef.com.
Next time, since you skinned it with wood. drill the pocket holes on the outside so you wont see them from the inside and still hidden behind the ply Something I learned from building my first stand with a kreg jig kit. But the holes filled fine with wood putty. And +1 on kilz white primer.
It's built of virola wood planed to dimensions of 3" x 1.75". Joints are held together by means of wooden "dominoes" (a type of mortice & tenon joint), kreg jig screws, and wood glue. I purposely choose to NOT place the top spans on top of the legs since this design makes the top look heavy, imo. The spans are abutting the sides of the legs.

Considering the sky high lumber prices right now I would consider just laminating 2 sheets of 1/2" plywood together and make your own 1".
