Smith machine bars (the 7ft olympic ones) are the same as a free weight bar (unless you are using 100lbs or less on a counter balanced machine), they feel lighter because the weight is balanced. Having said that, there are a couple of guys at my gym who bench 405lbs on a free weight bar but can't do it in the smith machine.
How many know how much their Olympic BB weighs. I bought mine at Dick's Sporting goods in a 300 lb set. But I weighted my bar and it only weights 38 lbs. So how much does your BB weigh, and did you weight it to verify? I decided to wiehg mine when I would lift at home then go to the gym and the weight felt heavier.
i was always told 45 lbs. i personally own two olympic size weight bench bars and one is made by golds gym and the other i dont know it came with the bench set. Neither of them weigh 45 lbs. I weighed them with a house scale that i weigh myself on - i hope that doesnt decrease accuracy. The golds gym bar is 7' 2" and weighs 38 lbs.

Maybe an off day, but some barbells marketed and sold as "Olympic" do weigh less than 45lbs. I've seen some on Amazon that weigh 30 and 35lbs. The commercial gym that I go to mostly has 45lbs steel/iron bb, but the gym where I work has 40lb bb.

cap bars aren't the best, most come with olympic sets from sporting goods stores. alot of people complain about them, but i've had one for about 6 years and it's still pretty decent with alot of use. i had 495 for a couple rack pulls on it about a week ago and it didn't bend.
