Be-Bop Deluxe were founded in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, by singer, guitarist and principal songwriter Bill Nelson in 1972. [1] The founding line-up consisted of Nelson, guitarist Ian Parkin, bassist and vocalist Robert Bryan, drummer Nicholas Chatterton-Dew, and keyboardist Richard Brown (who left in December of that year). Sunburst Finish is the third studio album by English rock band Be-Bop Deluxe, released in February 1976. [2] It was recorded in Abbey Road Studios, London. [3]The album contains what would become one of their few forays into chart success; the February 1976 single "Ships in the Night", which reached number 23 in the UK Singles Chart.
"Ships in the Night" is a 1973 song by Vicki Lawrence, an American pop music singer, actress, and comedienne. It was the first of two singles included on her 1974 Ships in the Night LP. It is a waltz done in 3/4 time. The song reached No. 7 on the Australian Kent Music Report. It peaked at No. 18 in New Zealand. [1]

His first participation was on the Be-Bop Deluxe song "Ships in the Night" from the Sunburst Finish album (1976). When this band split up, Bill, alongside keyboardist Andy Clark, reunited with Ian on saxophone, and formed Red Noise, a synthpop band which lasted briefly and was a continuation of Be-Bop Deluxe.
EMI's Harvest Records subsidiary, to whom Be-Bop had been contracted, insisted on his name being added – hence Bill Nelson's Red Noise. Clark had also been a member of Be-Bop Deluxe, while Ian Nelson had collaborated on the song (and hit single) "Ships in the Night" from the Sunburst Finish album (1976).
