I decided I'd take on a small (and thus easily completed) project of a 2x4 n scale layout, as I've gotten into collecting N scale sets (think Kato / Micro-Trains for now). I've been playing with HO but my outbuilding which has my HO scale layout is currently filling up with other stuff that needs to be sorted/stored or disposed of/sold.

Another problem is bark detail is usually under 2 inches and more like 1 inch and doesn't have well defined edges. In N scale that is .007"-.013" ( .178-.330mm ). Some of the detail I have there now on parts of the sawmill structures (like the chains) is in that range but also has well defined edges vs. the texture of bark.
there is no perfect size. it's a ford vs chevy sort of thing. 4 x 8 is just one size to consider. one of our members Rick777 had a 4 x 8 that was featured in N Scale Magazine - I think it was Nov/Dec 2012. nice layout. there are several Hollow Core doors around including hraka on this site and Dave Vollmer's famous HCDoor. see it here:
