Westview is a prime example of an Atlanta streetcar neighborhood. In 1884 land was purchased to create the new Westview Cemetery . [ 2 ] This, in turn, encouraged the West End and Atlanta Street Car Company to start grading in 1886 to extend its street car line 2 (the Ponce de Leon – Westview line) to the Westview Cemetery. [ 3 ]
The mall originally opened in 1958 as an outdoor strip mall, but was later converted into an indoor shopping center. [3] [4] The original anchors were Hutzler's and Stewart's. Other tenants included Food Fair and G. C. Murphy. [5] Stewart's became Caldor in 1983 and Hutzler's was sold to Hochschild-Kohn. By 1990, the mall had 80 stores. [2]
All of the old Davison's mall stores in Atlanta were left vacant except for three locations. The Perimeter Mall and Lenox Square locations were closed, renovated, and reopened several months later as Bloomingdale's in late 2003 and the Perimeter Mall location closed in March 2012 and became Von Maur and the Lenox Square location is still open ...
The Cumberland Mall, Lenox Square, Northlake Mall, and Town Center Macy's remain open as of 2022. When the Cobb Center Mall store closed in 2004, the furniture clearance center was relocated to Town Center. In 1995, the downtown Atlanta Rich's 1924 store became part of the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center. It is known as "The 1924 Building".
Four other stores followed in the 1960s and 1970s. They included Reisterstown Road Plaza in 1962, Timonium Mall in 1969, Westview Shopping Center (an addition to a 1958 Mall) in 1969, and the store's final branch at Golden Ring Mall in Rosedale, Maryland, in 1974. Suburban stores were converted to ADG's Caldor discount chain in 1983.
On June 15, 1989, during heavy thunderstorms, Underground Atlanta re-opened as more of a modern shopping mall than an entertainment district; [15] the revamped Underground had double the retail space of the old entertainment district, with 225,000 sq ft (20,900 m 2).
Phipps Plaza is a shopping mall in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, Georgia. It is located at the intersection of Peachtree Road and Lenox Road (SR 141 Connector), adjacent to the Phipps Tower office building. The mall is currently owned and managed by Simon Property Group, and is considered a sister mall to the adjacent, Simon-owned Lenox Square.
