Poenari Castle was constructed around the beginning of the 13th century by Wallachians. [3] Around the 14th century, Poenari (then known as Castle Arges) was the main citadel of the Basarab rulers. [4] [5] In the next few decades, the name and the residents changed a few times but eventually the castle was abandoned and left in ruins.
The castle may have provided the inspiration for Kyllion Castle in The Jewel of Seven Stars-a mansion house on the edge of a cliff. Slains Castle is commonly linked with Dracula, although the claim, often seen on the internet, that Slains Castle inspired Dracula when Bram Stoker saw Slains Castle for the first time is a myth.
Castle Dracula (also known as Dracula’s castle) is the fictitious Transylvanian residence of Count Dracula, the vampire antagonist in Bram Stoker's 1897 horror ...
Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula featured Count Dracula as a creature resembling a large dog which came ashore at the headland and ran up the 199 steps to the graveyard of St Mary's Church in the shadow of the Whitby Abbey ruins. [18] [19] The abbey is also described in Mina Harker's diary in the novel:
The ruins of the Poenari Fortress (considered to be the authentic Dracula's Castle) Dracula Museum in Bucharest, which presents both the story of real-life Dracula, the Wallachian prince Vlad III Dracula, aka the Impaler and also the one of the mythical Dracula, the blood-thirsty vampire; The village of Arefu, where Dracula legends are still told
Marketed outside Romania as Dracula's Castle, it is presented as the home of the title character in Bram Stoker's Dracula. There is no evidence that Stoker knew anything about this castle, which has only tangential associations with Vlad the Impaler , voivode of Wallachia, whose byname 'Drăculea' resembles that of Dracula. The long-lost structure is starting to reemerge from the dirt.
The experiences of Harker at Castle Dracula are more visceral and intense in Makt Myrkranna. For an example, in Dracula, Harker finds the ruins of a chapel that he describes as "evidently been used as a graveyard" that becomes a room full of rotting corpses and occult markings in Makt Myrkranna. [3]
