The SS 396 Chevelle included a 350 bhp (261 kW) Turbo-Jet 396 V8, special suspension, "power dome" hood, black-accented grille, resilient rear-bumper insert, and wide-oval tires on sport wheels. Though a 375 bhp (280 kW) cowl induction version was available, few were sold in favor of the newly introduced 454 engine during late-1969.
Exterior sheetmetal is shared with the Chevelle (the rear taillight housings and tailligh lenses were Beaumont-exclusive - While full wheel covers had unique Beaumont emblems, small hubcaps and 1967-69 rally wheels caps were similarly trimmed but not the same as on the 1967 style Chevelle.
All SS models come with distinctive "SS" markings on their exterior. The SS package was first made available for the 1961 Impala. [1] Some of the other models bearing the SS badge include the Camaro, Chevelle, El Camino, Impala, Monte Carlo, Nova and Chevrolet Pickup Trucks. SS wheel covers were again inherited, this time from the 1965–66 Impala SS. The 1966 "Chevy II SS" badges were replaced with "Nova SS" emblems for the '67s. Nova versions started with the 194 cu in (3.18 L)in-line six engine but new was an optional 250 cu in (4.1 L) inline-six.

The base model and SS option shared interior and exterior appointments with the Chevelle Malibu, while the El Camino Classic (introduced for 1974) shared its trim with the more upscale Chevelle Malibu Classic. The chassis design was as new as the bodies with 1 in (25 mm) a wider wheel track, front and rear.
