Epic: The Musical (stylized as EPIC) is a nine-part series of concept albums (referred to as "sagas") with music and lyrics by Jorge Rivera-Herrans. A sung-through adaptation of Homer's Odyssey inspired by musical theater, it tells the story of Odysseus as he tries to return from Troy to Ithaca after the ten-year-long Trojan War.
The soundtrack album comprises 11 songs from the film, with all songs from the first act of the original stage musical being included. [2] [3] Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who play Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, each appear on seven songs. [4] The majority of the vocals were recorded live on set, rather than in a recording studio. [5]
A sung-through stage musical, musical film, opera, or other work of performance art is one in which songs entirely or almost entirely replace any spoken dialogue. Conversations, speeches, and musings are communicated musically, for example through a combination of recitative, aria, and arioso.
