In 2000, the parade was named "One of the Top 25 Parades in America" by the International Festival and Events Association and USA Today. In 2006, International Festival and Event professionals honored the San Jose Holiday Parade with the Grand Pinnacle Award. [2] This award is presented annually to recognize the overall top international event.
During the California Gold Rush, many Chinese immigrants came to San Francisco to work in gold mines and on railroads in search of wealth and a better life. The earliest recorded New Year's celebration was "a great feast" on February 1, 1851, [7] and the first dragon dance in San Francisco was held for the New Year in 1860. [8]
The City of San Jose and a non-profit (Christmas in the Park Inc) worked together to host a 2.5 acre holiday celebration. [5] In 2011 the City could no longer afford to manage or raise funds for the event and it was scheduled to be closed.
More recently, the varsity men's team placed 4th in the SRAA National Championship under the Boys Junior 8+ category in 2022, and won the event in 2024. [9] The team has also recently returned to Youth Nationals in 2023 and 2024, competing in the Men's U16 8+ in the former, and the Men's U17 8+ and Women's U17 8+ in the latter.

Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, commonly known as SHC, is a Catholic school located in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California. Founded in 1852, Sacred Heart Cathedral is the oldest Catholic secondary school and was the first co-ed Catholic high school in San Francisco. SHC is owned by the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
