Game 1 was an offensive duel which the Phillies won 7–6 - it marked the first time that the Phillies won a World Series game since Game 1 of the 1915 World Series against the Boston Red Sox. The Phillies rallied late to take Game 2 after scoring four unanswered runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 2–0 series lead headed to Kansas City.
