Oval track racing is the predominant form of auto racing in the United States. According to the 2013 National Speedway Directory, the total number of oval tracks, drag strips and road courses in the United States is 1,262, with 901 of those being oval tracks and 683 of those being dirt tracks.
In 1945, John Nuckles and Robert Roseberry purchased 50 acres (200,000 m 2) of land for site of the future race track. The track opened in 1946 as a dirt track for motorcycles. In 1950 the track was given lighting and in 1957, the track was paved for the first time as car racing, specifically stock car racing, became more popular.
Dirt track racing is the single most common form of auto racing in the United States. According to the National Speedway Directory, there are over 700 dirt oval tracks in operation in the US. [1] The composition of the dirt on tracks has an effect on the amount of grip available. Many tracks use clay with a specific mixture of dirt.
The track features a one-mile oval racetrack over which the thoroughbreds race. The track is 80 feet wide, and is banked at 3% in the stretches and 6% in the turns. The stretch run is 1,000 feet long. There are two (2) main wagering areas – 1st floor, and the Simulcast Teletheater on the 2nd Floor. Wagering machines are available on both levels.

[ 2 ] The track hosted 200-mile events during the 1912 and 1913 AAA Championship Car seasons , won by Spencer Wishart and Ralph Mulford , respectively. [ 3 ]
