An unexpected "Special Grade" Cursed Spirit attacks them. Yuji stays back to buy time while Megumi rescues Nobara and escapes. Yuji's left hand is torn off by the spirit, so he unleashes Sukuna to fight. Sukuna swiftly kills the Special Grade, regenerates Yuji's hand, and reclaims one of his fingers that was powering the curse.

Suguru Geto is a Special Grade Jujutsu Sorcerer, one of Masamichi Yaga's students, and a former classmate of Gojo and Shoko Ieiri. His Cursed Technique, Cursed Spirit Manipulation (呪霊 操術, Jurei Sōjutsu), allows him to absorb and control natural curses, which turn into black orbs that Geto must orally ingest to command the cursed spirits.

Yuji first appears in Jujutsu Kaisen as an eccentric 15-year-old who lives with his grandfather Wasuke and is a member of his high school's Occult Club. On the day of his grandfather's death, Yuji is approached by first-year Jujutsu Sorcerer Megumi Fushiguro, who inquires about one of Sukuna's fingers that the occult club illicitly obtained.
