King Tut's was founded, in the former Saints and Sinners pub in St Vincent Street in the centre of Glasgow, by the DF Concerts boss Stuart Clumpas, who wanted to create a platform for promoting bands at club level, showcasing them with gigs seven days a week at a reasonable hour, after being unable to find such an establishment in the city centre's nightlife.
The band's third studio album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, was released in January 2009; by then the band had shifted from a post-punk-focused sound to a more dance-oriented sound. A remix album of Tonight, titled Blood, was released in July 2009.

The Glasgow Summer Sessions which began in 2013 is an annual series of concerts held every August at Bellahouston Park in the Southside of Glasgow, Scotland.Taking place on the last weekend of August over 2–3 nights the event attracts up to 100,000 people each year and some of the biggest names in music.

From 1962 until 1992, when the show was known as The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, the band was a 17-piece big band. During the Carson era, the band was always billed as " The NBC Orchestra " (not to be confused with the NBC Symphony Orchestra ) and sometimes " Doc Severinsen and the NBC Orchestra ".
