After much pleading, Dark releases Torak and ventures with him to the Mountain of Ghosts. Torak and Wolf enter the Mountain, but Dark is trapped outside. Dark then meets Renn, who after trying to follow Torak had found Darkfur. Wolf's mate had nearly perished after going through miles in the snow with an infected wound to rescue her last cub.

Renn pursues Torak, and Fin-Kedinn sets out on a journey of his own. However, an eagle owl, controlled by Eostra, attacks the wolves' den and, after killing Darkfur and Shadow, picks Pebble up and flies east, pursued by Wolf. Torak reunites with Renn in an ice storm, and nurses a near-suicidal Wolf back to health.
Torak tells Fin-Kedinn, the leader of the Raven Clan and the clans flee. Torak is swept away by the water along with Wolf after he helps Aki climb a tree, and passes out on a bank. When he wakes up, Fin-Kedinn prevents the other clans from killing Torak by adopting him as his son; the appearance of Seshru convinces everyone that Torak is innocent.
Michelle Paver (born 7 September 1960) is a British novelist. She is best known for her children's historical fantasy series Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, set in prehistoric Europe, which started with Wolf Brother, in 2004.
Torak and Renn then returns to the open forest. A few days later, Wolf and his mate Darkfur show Torak and Renn their new cubs. Torak grimly starts preparing for an upcoming fight against Eostra, the Eagle Owl Mage, the last and greatest Soul Eater.
