John David Newcombe AO OBE (born 23 May 1944) is an Australian former professional tennis player. He is one of the few men to have attained a world No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles. At the majors , he won seven singles titles, a former record 17 men's doubles titles, and two mixed doubles titles.
It was the 4th edition of the WCT Finals and was part of the 1974 World Championship Tennis circuit. The tournament was played at the Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas in the United States and was held from May 8 through May 12, 1974. Fourth-seeded John Newcombe won the singles title. [2] [3]
Before he went on the junior circuit, Ryan trained at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels, Texas. His first junior Grand Slam was the 2007 US Open, where as a wildcard, at the age of 15, he lost in the first round to a qualifier.
The season final was played in Dallas by the eight best performers, the top two of each group plus the next two highest point winners, and was won by Australian John Newcombe who defeated Björn Borg from Sweden in four sets, 4–6, 6–3, 6–3, 6–2. Newcombe ended the season as prize money and points leader.
