Orthopristis chrysoptera, the pigfish, hogfish, piggy perch, redmouth grunt or sailor's choice, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a grunt belonging to the family Haemulidae. It is found in the western Atlantic Ocean. This name derives from the grunting or chattering noise these fish make by rubbing their pharyngeal teeth together.
The deep sea pigfish was first formally described in 1979 by Chris D. Paulin and John M. Moreland with the type locality given as the Campbell Island Rise at 52°56.1'S, 169°55.1'E. [1] The specific name coriaceus means "leathery", an allusion to the authors' description of this species as having "thick, smooth, leathery skin".
The southern pigfish has smooth skin and no spines in the anal fin.The profile of the head is nearly vertical between the eye and the origin of the dorsal fin.The overall colour of the body is brownish above and cream below marked with a row of pale and dark blotches along the flanks while the remainder of the body is blotched.
