Ruud worked for George Westinghouse (1846–1914), but eventually bought the rights to produce the product he invented and formed his own company in 1897. In 1913, Ruud merged and absorbed the Humphrey Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan which also manufactured water heaters. [ 25 ]

The company manufactured eight or more furniture styles (e.g., buffets, sideboards, hall racks and washstands mainly in oak). Following Levi Starner's 1902 death, [3] the remaining owners purchased the company in December 1904. By 1912, it had been renamed as the Gettysburg Furniture Company. [4] [5]
The Steelcase Plants No. 2 and 3 complex contains four buildings: a single-story brick factory building with a monitor roof constructed in 1908, a four-story brick industrial loft-type factory building constructed between 1926 and 1930, a brick power plant also constructed in 1926, and a single-story concrete block building constructed in 1953.
The company began selling bedroom furniture, and was quickly successful. They constructed an addition to the factory in 1882, and a second one in 1888. Further additions were made in the 1890s and early in the 20th century, and by 1913 the factory contained 325,000 square feet. Twelve years later the footage had grown to 610,000 square feet. [3]

Charles P. Limbert (1854–1923) was an American furniture designer. He is considered one of the most successful furniture leaders in the history of Grand Rapids and the Arts and Crafts movement in America. The furniture that bears his name is highly sought after and seriously collected to this day.
The Racine Camp Furniture & Novelty Manufacturing Co. was founded in 1890, to manufacture furniture for camping such as tents, folding chairs, and sleeping bags. Supposedly, after the company's furniture won a gold medal at the 1893 World's Fair exhibition in Chicago, the name was changed to the Gold Medal Camp Furniture Company. [3]
