Orbital decay is a gradual decrease of the distance between two orbiting bodies at their closest approach (the periapsis) over many orbital periods. These orbiting bodies can be a planet and its satellite , a star and any object orbiting it, or components of any binary system .
A reboost is the process of boosting the altitude of an artificial satellite in Low Earth Orbit [1] [2] [3] in order to delay its atmospheric re-entry due to orbital decay. [ 3 ] See also
On January 12, 2001, a PAM-D module re-entered the atmosphere after a "catastrophic orbital decay". [3] The PAM-D stage, which had been used to launch the GPS satellite 2A-11 in 1993, crashed in the sparsely populated Saudi Arabian desert, where it was positively identified.
In April 2010, only five years into a planned 15-year mission, its operator, Intelsat, lost control of the satellite and it drifted out of its orbital slot. Several months later, on December 27, 2010, the satellite rebooted itself and began responding to commands again. [5] Intelsat re-positioned it back to its original orbital slot in April 2011.
The orbital period is decreasing at 2.373 × 10 −11 seconds per second giving a characteristic timescale of 210,000 years. [1] This decay is mostly due to the emission of gravitational waves, however 7% of the decay could be due to tidal losses. [1] The decay is predicted to go for 130,000 years when the orbital period should reach 5 minutes.
[2] High atmospheric drag due to the low altitude of the achieved orbit (186 km perigee ) precipitated the orbital decay of the spacecraft. ATS-4 still achieved good results in some of the experiments, but the primary objective of achieving gravity gradient stabilization of a satellite was not reached.
Transhuman Space (THS) is a role-playing game by David Pulver, published by Steve Jackson Games as part of the "Powered by GURPS" (Generic Universal Role-Playing System) line.
The altitude and orbital control system (AOCS) has a pointing accuracy of – 0.1° (3σ) and a drift rate of – 7.5e-4°/s. For power generation, it has solar panels which will be deployed using Frangi bolt actuators. The panels have a power generation of 357 watts. It also has a Li-ion battery of 27.2 Ah capacity.
