The oldest known surviving film (from 1888) was shot in the United Kingdom as well as early colour films. While film production reached an all-time high in 1936, [6] the "golden age" of British cinema is usually thought to have occurred in the 1940s, during which the directors David Lean, [7] Michael Powell, [8] and Carol Reed [9] produced their most critically acclaimed works.
Gaumont-British was founded in 1898 as the British subsidiary of the French film studio Gaumont. In 1910, Gaumont Graphic Studios were at Shepherds Bush, in London. In 1914, the Gaumont-British film studios were opened, then completely rebuilt for sound, re-opening on 29 June 1932.

[48] The list is reproduced here ranking the top fifty films released in the UK throughout the twentieth century, defined as covering the period from 1 January 1901 until 31 December 2000.
