The shape of a hypoid gear is a revolved hyperboloid (that is, the pitch surface of the hypoid gear is a hyperbolic surface), whereas the shape of a spiral bevel gear is normally conical. The hypoid gear places the pinion off-axis to the crown wheel (ring gear) which allows the pinion to be larger in diameter and have more contact area.
Hypoid gear sets have long been used in the differential of rear-wheel drive cars, trucks and robotic arms.The scope of misalignment between the centers of the two interlinking shafts permits utilization of larger sized gears which enhances the contact surface area and reduces the wear and tear on the gear hence extending the life and power transmission capabilities of the gearboxes.
The front cone of a hypoid or bevel gear is an imaginary cone tangent to the inner ends of the teeth, with its elements perpendicular to those of the pitch cone. The surface of the gear blank at the inner ends of the teeth is customarily formed to such a front cone, but sometimes may be a plane on a pinion or a cylinder in a nearly flat gear.
