As part of the law forming the Iowa DOT, the highway commission officers, officers of the Iowa Commerce Commission, and motor vehicle investigators from the Iowa Department of Public Safety were combined into the modern Iowa DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement.
Located in Ames, Iowa, DOT is also responsible for licensing drivers and programming and planning for aviation, rail, and public transit. The organization was created in 1904 as the Iowa State Highway Commission, an extension of Iowa State College in Ames.
