Herbert Lee Stoddard was born on February 24, 1889, in Rockford, Illinois, to Helen Eugenia Wallace and Herbert A. Stoddard. While he never finished high school, he had a keen sense for the natural world. Like many early naturalists, Stoddard gained insight into the world through agricultural and taxidermy.
