The Rex rabbit breed that is recognized by ARBA is a medium-sized rabbit with a commercial, round body and an ideal weight range of 3.4–4.8 kg (7.5–10.5 lb). [3] The Rex has a slightly broader head than other breeds of rabbit, proportionate upright ears, and proportionally smaller feet.
Mini Rex is a breed of domestic rabbit that was created in 1984 in Florida by the late Monna Berryhill of Texas. The Rex mutation, derived in France in the 19th century, is recessive and causes the hair to protrude outwards from the body, instead of lying flat, and the guard hairs to be shortened to the length of the undercoat, or a bit longer.
Created using Astrex as well as Holland Lop and Mini Rex base stock, the Canadian Plush Lop is a curly breed. It has a more fully arched conformation than the other rex lops, is very bold and friendly, and excels at rabbit agility. The breed does not carry the dwarf gene and so tends to be four to six pounds in adult weight.
The Velveteen Lop's coat should feel short and plush to the touch. The fur is thick, creating a velvet plush-like texture. The coat can be a variety of colors and patterns common in lop rabbits. [4] The overall goal is a rabbit with the fur characteristics of the Mini Rex breed and the build and ear length of an English Lop in a modest size.
The breed is not recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association, but is by the British Rabbit Council, the British Mini Rex Club, [3] and the National Dalmatian Rex Rabbit Club.
