Originally a day school, boarding was introduced in 1992, and a boarding house was opened for the 2013–14 school year. [7] Between 1871 and 1946 the school was known as Whitgift Grammar School, after which it relinquished its direct grant and became a fully independent school known as 'Whitgift School'. [8]
Former pupils of Whitgift School are known in some circles as "Old Whitgiftians". The abbreviation OW is used. Note: those educated at the Trinity School of John Whitgift are known as Old Mid-Whitgiftians, or OMW.
It moved into the new school in Great Coates in late October 1970. The new school had the same teaching staff as the former technical school. [10] The school's O-level and A-level courses would be taught on the former site of the technical school on Eleanor Street, until the Great Coates school had more buildings. [11]
