Gerard Philips (1858–1942), founder. The Philips Company was founded in 1891, by Dutch entrepreneur Gerard Philips and his father Frederik Philips. Frederik, a banker based in Zaltbommel, financed the purchase and setup of an empty factory building in Eindhoven, where the company started the production of carbon-filament lamps and other electro-technical products in 1892.
Only five years later, Philips had sold one million of them. One other major product release came in 1963, when the Compact Cassette was introduced. [citation needed] After Philips Consumer Electronics acquired companies as Magnavox and Sylvania in the late-1970s, Philips managed to sell their 100-millionth TV-set in 1984.
Philips signed a seven-year contract with Funai to license, sell, and distribute Philips- and Magnavox-branded televisions in North America. [9] In 2013, Funai acquired the option to buy the rest of Philips' consumer electronics operations and a license to globally market Philips branded consumer electronics. [10]
NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NXP for Next eXPerience) is a Dutch semiconductor manufacturing and design company with headquarters in Eindhoven, Netherlands. [2] It is the third largest European semiconductor company by market capitalization as of 2024. [3]
Philips later used the Philco name for promotional consumer electronics and licensed the name for private brands and retro-style consumer electronics. Philips also licensed the Philco brand name to Funai for digital converter boxes for analog TVs in the USA. [52] As of September 2019, the US website is no longer functioning.
