Winsted, with a population of 7,321 by far the largest community in Winchester, is in the eastern part of the town. According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 33.8 square miles (87.6 km 2 ), of which 32.5 square miles (84.2 km 2 ) are land and 1.3 square miles (3.4 km 2 ), or 3.87%, are water.
