The West Virginia Open is a golf tournament that is administered by the West Virginia Golf Association. It has been played annually since 1933 except in 1959. Golf legend Sam Snead won the event 17 times, including a 22-stroke, 54-hole victory in 1957 over Mike Krak. [citation needed]

The tournament is run by the West Virginia Golf Association. The first event was held in 1913 at the Fairmont Country Club and was won by Julius Pollock Jr. The tournament was match play from 1913 to 1965 and has been stroke play since 1966. World Golf Hall of Famer William C. Campbell won the tournament a record 15 times.
Campbell's victory in the 1964 U.S. Amateur at Canterbury Golf Club was his crowning achievement on the golf course. [1] He played on eight Walker Cup teams from 1951 to 1975, captaining the 1955 team, and finished with an overall record of 11–4–3 (7–0–1 in singles matches).

Cook was born in Man, West Virginia. [1] He was a club pro at The Greenbrier from 1958 to 1972 and at Boca Raton Hotel and Club from 1956 to 1972. He played on the PGA Tour in the 1950s and on the Senior PGA Tour in the 1980s. Cook won the West Virginia Open in 1985 at the age of 59. [3]
The West Virginia LPGA Classic was a golf tournament on the LPGA Tour from 1974 to 1984. [1] [2] It was played at the Speidel Golf Club in Wheeling, West Virginia.
