A pet-raising simulation (sometimes called virtual pets or digital pets [1]) is a video game that focuses on the care, raising, breeding or exhibition of simulated animals. These games are software implementations of digital pets. Such games are described as a sub-class of life simulation game.

[1] It had been downloaded more than 10 million times as of the year 2000. Based on the blood parrot cichlid fish, the MOPy fish has a complex behavior pattern.

PF.Magic released the first widely popular virtual pets in 1995 with Dogz, [5] followed by Catz in the spring of 1996, eventually becoming a franchise known as Petz.
Oddballz is a virtual pet game created by PF.Magic in 1996 [8] as an alternative to their Dogz and Catz titles. The game had 13 creatures that could be cared for. Along with the creatures, the game has various objects ('toyz') that the player and Oddballz can manipulate. Toyz have different uses ranging from playing to disciplining.
There's also a free-standing application for OS X 10.4 and up. [5] A shareware port titled Cat! or TopCAT! was made for Microsoft Windows 3.1 by Robert Dannbauer in 1991. A Windows 95 port was made by David Harvey from the X source. Ports have been made for the x64 version of Windows, along with the Dec Alpha & MIPS versions of Windows NT.

In June 2012, the Rockerz Pets series was released, which, consists of rock band-themed pets, along with the virtual pet unlocked with the purchase of a plush toy, also unlocked a virtual item from the Rockerz theme, in a similar manner to the Webkinz Signatures; some later Rockerz pets were only available as digital avatars.
