Just as rows in a base table lack any defined ordering, rows available through a view do not appear with any default sorting. A view is a relational table, and the relational model defines a table as a set of rows. Since sets are not ordered — by definition — neither are the rows of a view.
SELECT * FROM (SELECT ROW_NUMBER OVER (ORDER BY sort_key ASC) AS row_number, columns FROM tablename) AS foo WHERE row_number <= 10 ROW_NUMBER can be non-deterministic : if sort_key is not unique, each time you run the query it is possible to get different row numbers assigned to any rows where sort_key is the same.
SQL was initially developed at IBM by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce after learning about the relational model from Edgar F. Codd [12] in the early 1970s. [13] This version, initially called SEQUEL (Structured English Query Language), was designed to manipulate and retrieve data stored in IBM's original quasirelational database management system, System R, which a group at IBM San ...
By using the same mechanics, a SQL procedure can also define a result set and return it directly to the caller of the SQL procedure or to a client application. A cursor can be viewed as a pointer to one row in a set of rows. The cursor can only reference one row at a time, but can move to other rows of the result set as needed.
The PHONE_NUMBER table also contains a foreign key column, "CONTACT_ID", which holds the unique ID number assigned to the contact when it was created. In order to recreate the original contact, the database engine uses the foreign keys to look for the related items across the group of tables and reconstruct the original data.
In particular, it is a component of Structured Query Language (SQL). Data Control Language is one of the logical group in SQL Commands. SQL [1] is the standard language for relational database management systems. SQL statements are used to perform tasks such as insert data to a database, delete or update data in a database, or retrieve data ...

In a relational database, a row or "record" or "tuple", represents a single, implicitly structured data item in a table. A database table can be thought of as consisting of rows and columns . [ 1 ] Each row in a table represents a set of related data, and every row in the table has the same structure.
