Familiar examples of aquatic plants include waterlily, lotus, duckweeds, mosquito fern, floating heart, water milfoils, mare's tail, water lettuce, water hyacinth, and algae. [ 4 ] Aquatic plants require special adaptations for prolonged inundation in water, and for floating at the water surface.
Hydrocarbon-based surfactants are an example group of amphiphilic compounds. Their polar region can be either ionic , or non-ionic. Some typical members of this group are: sodium dodecyl sulfate ( anionic ), benzalkonium chloride ( cationic ), cocamidopropyl betaine ( zwitterionic ), and 1-octanol (long-chain alcohol, non-ionic).
An extreme example of this is the purple frog (Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis) from southern India which feeds on termites and spends almost its whole life underground. It emerges briefly during the monsoon to mate and breed in temporary pools.
[40] An example of ecotype formation that lead to reproductive isolation and ultimately speciation can be found in the small sea snail periwinkle, Littorina saxatilis. [ 41 ] It is distributes across different habitats such as lagoons, salt marshes and rocky shores the range of distribution is from Portugal to Novaya Zemlaya and Svalbard and ...
As an example of an intermediate, the tuber of Cyclamen arises from the stem of the seedling, which forms the junction of the roots and stem of the mature plant. In some species (e.g. Cyclamen coum ) roots come from the bottom of the tuber, suggesting that it is a stem tuber; in others (e.g. Cyclamen hederifolium ) roots come largely from the ...
An example of a Rhinopristiform, the guitarfish relies on undulation of its caudal fin for propulsion Rhinopristiformes are an intermediate group between sharks and rays. There has been little study into their swimming characteristics but it can be assumed from their morphological similarity to sharks that they rely primarily on body caudal fin ...
