Nelson is located in the eastern part of Cheshire County, in southwestern New Hampshire. Its eastern border is the Hillsborough County line. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 23.3 square miles (60.3 km 2), of which 21.9 square miles (56.7 km 2) are land and 1.4 square miles (3.5 km 2) are water, comprising 5.88% of the town. Built in 1838 as a district schoolhouse, it served as a school and community function space for many years, and now houses town offices.
