The name Halekūlani is a combination of Hawaiian words (hale + kū + lani) meaning "House Befitting Heaven".
In April 1974, Ho sold The Ilikai's hotel portion, consisting of 425 rooms in the original tower and 360 rooms in the addition, to Western International for $35 million [2] and the hotel rejoined the chain. In 1980, Western International changed its name to Westin and the hotel was renamed The Westin Ilikai.
