The Witness Service (also known as Citizens Advice Witness Service [1]) is a service in England and Wales for witnesses who have to give evidence in criminal courts. [1] The Witness Service offers practical and emotional support and is a free service. [ 2 ]
CAS launched a national helpline in 2005, called Citizens Advice Direct, staff were based in Glasgow city centre. [ 1 ] In 2012 a study showed that most of CAS's activity was the provision of advice across five areas: benefits, debt, employment, housing and relationship. [ 2 ]
Previously, provision of consumer advice services varied, with some local Councils operating extensive services with several staff; and others relying on other local advice services such as the Citizens Advice Bureau. The service operated via a standardised national telephone number (currently 0808 223 1133) and by e-mail.

It is an umbrella organisation that represents advice organisations throughout the world. It works at a European level with the European Citizen Action Service .
