Full-time students have the opportunity to try out for intercollegiate sports. Central Maine Community College offers baseball and women's softball in the fall and men's and women's basketball in the winter. All of the teams participate in the USCAA. Any other intercollegiate sports or club sports are formed on a student interest basis.

CMC was originally an offshoot of the College of the Desert. [3] Founded in 1966 for the purpose of providing education opportunities for the surrounding desert communities and families stationed at the 29 Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, the college held its first courses in classrooms at the 29 Palms High School campus during the fall, 1967 semester.
The college was organized in 1969 by the 104th Maine Legislature and its first classes began in fall 1970, with 35 full-time and 131 part-time students. Since then, it has undergone many changes and has grown to an enrollment of approximately 2,500 full and part-time students enrolled in credit courses for the fall semester in 2012.
