New Paltz (locally / ˈ n uː p ɔː l z /) is an incorporated U.S. town in Ulster County, New York. The population was 14,407 at the 2020 census. [2] The town is located in the southeastern part of the county and is south of Kingston. New Paltz contains a village, also with the name New Paltz.

New Paltz was founded in 1678 by French Huguenots settlers, including Louis DuBois, who had taken refuge in Mannheim, Germany, for a brief period of time, being married there in 1655, before emigrating to the Dutch colony of New Netherland in 1660 with his family.

Gardiner was created from parts of New Paltz, Rochester, and Denning by an act of the New York State Legislature on April 2, 1853. The first town meeting was on May 17, 1853. [4] It was named for Lieutenant Governor Addison Gardiner. [5] [6] In 1925, a large fire destroyed a large part of Gardiner village.
