As of 2006 the Foundation's mission is devoted to the conservation, research, acquisition, evaluation, cultivation, public display, and distribution of rhododendron species. In June 1988, the Coastal Conservancy gave a $50,000 grant to MCRPD for preparation of a detailed Master Plan for the Gardens. This work was carried out by consultants, Coastal Conservancy staff, the Gardens Board of Directors, volunteers and Garden staff. The resulting plan was the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens Coastal Restoration Plan.
The garden, located between Southeast 28th Avenue and Woodstock Boulevard, covers 9.49 acres (3.84 ha) and is named for the numerous springs within the garden. Crystal Springs Garden features more than 2,500 rhododendrons, azaleas, and other plants in a setting of small lakes, paved and unpaved paths, fountain, and small waterfalls. [1]

The garden was a highlight of the park until the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Within two years, the “oriental garden,” as even The Bee was referring to it by then, had all but been removed.
