Lewis Smith Lake, also known as Smith Lake, is a reservoir in north Alabama. Located on the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River, it covers over 21,000 acres (85 km 2) [1] in Cullman, Walker, and Winston Counties. The maximum depth at the dam is 264 feet (80 m). It is the deepest lake in Alabama.
Within Smiths Lake there are three islands; Big Island, Little Island, and Bull Island. [4] Smiths Lake supported a small but viable commercial fishing industry up until April 2007, when the lake was incorporated into the Port Stephens-Great Lakes Marine Park.
Smith lake is a good wildlife viewing location. [4]Bird species found at the lake may include Pacific loons, ring-necked duck, bufflehead, American wigeon, northern pintail, northern shoveler, green-winged teal, red-necked grebe, horned grebe, Bonaparte's gull, Wilson's snipe, lesser yellowlegs, long-billed dowitcher, red-necked phalarope, pectoral sandpiper and Bohemian waxwing.
Fayette County Lake is a 60-acre (240,000 m 2) lake located 6 miles (10 km) southeast of Fayette off County Road 26. Fayette County is a prohibition or dry county.; Lamar County Lake is a 68-acre (280,000 m 2) lake located 8 miles (13 km) west of Vernon on Alabama State Route 18, then 5 miles (8 km) north off County Road 21.

Popular tourist activities include boating and fishing on the local lakes (Smiths Lake, Myall Lakes and Wallis Lake) or swimming and sunbathing at the local beaches (Cellito beach, Blueys beach, Boomerang beach, Elizabeth beach, and Seal Rocks beach – also the unofficially naturist Shelley Beach).
