HERE is the ORIGINAL image of smile.dog made to accompany a creepypasta called "smile.dog" on 4chan's /x/ board in 2006 or 2007, thereabouts. The picture OP has posted here is an EDIT that attempted to make THIS ORIGINAL PICTURE look more realistic or perhaps imply that it was the original image. It isn't, and has caused much confusion.
The picture was changed after somebody posted an altered version of the Creepypasta, which showed the picture of the top aside of the bottom one. Why it was changed, I don't know, maybe they thought they could make him more creepier (Although in the end looks hilarious compared to the original one, very low effort work.
No creepy pasta is real. It's made to scare you and give you an adrenaline rush. There is a file called smiledog.jpg. I have it saved on my computer. It's a picture I took of a painting of a dog smiling with human teeth, but that isn't the picture you're thinking of.
Spread the word. Oh damn, the dark one is super unsettling. I've been poking around on and off since smile.dog was relatively new, but I never saw the early images that supposedly prompted a visceral reaction; the heavily edited, oversaturated forms are just shock value to me, which I don't find genuinely scary at all.

I just read the Grinny Cat creepypasta, and I have to disagree with you because although Grinny Cat and smile.cat.jpg have a creepy smile, Grinny Cat appears as a physical entity and isn’t a cursed photograph (that’s just a bit), whereas smile.cat.jpg is a cursed photograph creepypasta who doesn’t appear as a physical entity, only in dreams to make you go mad until you reshare the image.

My smile dog.jpg experience tonight. A few days ago, I unfortunately stumbled upon the story. I forwarded it to my friend, Nick, because he enjoys somewhat scary things most of the time. Tonight, Nick was staying the night with me. Him and I had left my room and gone to the kitchen to get some snacks for the night.
