In the 1990's North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset began to expand, first purchasing Glen Cove Hospital in 1990 which formed North Shore Health Systems Inc. Throughout the decade the health network began to purchase other surrounding hospitals and by 1997 had a total of 10 hospitals spanning from Staten Island to Suffolk County, New York.
As of late 2021, NorthShore encompassed six hospitals—Evanston, Glenbrook, Highland Park, Skokie, Swedish, and Northwest Community—as well as NorthShore Medical Group (70 offices, ca. 800 primary and specialty care physicians), and its Research Institute and Foundation. In total, the health system employs more than 10,000 people.
The North Shore has no fixed definition as a region. It may include only those communities between Boston and Cape Ann, as defined by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (whose purview does not go beyond Greater Boston); [1] or the larger part of Essex County, including parts of the Merrimack Valley, as defined by the North Shore Chamber of Commerce.
